Hoof prints meet designer chic as the first Glorious Goodwood Celebrity Ladies race takes place on Thursday with models, actresses, magazine editors and DJ’s amongst the riders taking on the challenge, in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The actress Annette Mason, heads William Hill’s betting on the race at 3-1, riding champion trainer Richard Hannon’s horse Avon River.
The wife of Pink Floyd-drummer Nick Mason has been busy preparing for her racecourse debut by piloting her own helicopter from Elstree to Hannon’s Berkshire base in order to notch-up some miles in the saddle.
One of the most experienced jockeys in the field, CH4 racing presenter Emma Spencer – the daughter of trainer Jack Ramsden and ex-wife of champion jockey Jamie Spencer -already has several race victories already in her handbag, and is aboard the 7-2 second-favourite Jungle Bay.
Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Rumour has it that this race has brought out the dark side in many of the riders with feverish preparation underway. All are fashionistas in their day-jobs but style in the saddle will count at Goodwood, and we’re betting Pink Floyd filly Annette Mason will get the best tune out of her horse!’’
Hot on their hooves are a series of other accomplished horsewomen; amongst them Supermodel Edie Campbell (9-2), who is switching from her day job as face of Burberry to ride George Baker, and Radio One DJ Sara Cox – whose exploits in Sport Relief’s ‘Only Fools on Horses’ were well-documented.
Other famous names swapping clothes-horses for real steeds include Kate Reardon, editor of Tatler, model Delfina Figueras, and Talktalk head-honcho Dido Harding. They are joined by some of the most glamorous ladies in equestrianism, polo player Clare Milford-Haven, dressage rider Laura Bechtolsheimer, three-day eventer Daisy Trayford and trainer’s daughter Francesca Cumani.
The ladies will still have the couture look during the race, though, with Racing silks that have been especially designed by a number of top labels, including Kate Middleton’s fave Issa, Amanda Wakeley, Jasmine Guinness, Pearl Lowe and Hermes.
William Hill Bet for Goodwood Charity Ladies Race: 3-1 Avon River (Annette Mason), 7-2 Jungle Bay (Emma Spencer), 9-2 George Baker (Edie Campbell), 11-2 Six Wives (Delfina Figueras), 15-2 Rasheed (Francesca Cumani), 9-1 Potentiale (Sara Cox), 14-1 High on the Hog (Daisy Trayford), 14-1 Grand Piano (Kate Reardon), 20-1 Northern Dare (Laura Bechtolscheimer), 33-1 Ede’s Dot Com (Dido Harding), 200-1 Starfinch (Clare Milford-Haven)
