Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s shock comeback and victory against Roger Federer at Wimbledon was a superb result for bookies Ladbrokes.
The Frenchman’s sensational comeback eliminated up to £250,000 worth of multiples with the big four acca backed off the boards in shops and online.
Federer was the 13/8 favourite for the tournament and now hands that position to Nadal at 5/4 who is the biggest loser in the outright book from Murray as a result of a £40k bet laid at 9/4 last week.
7/1 tournament outsider Tsonga is 7/4 to beat Djokovic (4/9) and make it to the final to face the winner of Murray (7/4) v Nadal (4/9).
The bookies were also saved a further hiding thanks to Murray’s decision to keep his beard after offering 4/1 he’d appear on court clean shaven today.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Tsonga’s done us a huge favour today. If he does the unthinkable and wins the whole thing we might have to build a state of him in the foyer.”
he added: “Nadal would be the worst result as it stands. Support for Murray is growing however and a semi-final victory against the Spaniard would surely trigger a monumental patriotic plunge.”
