Rory McIlroy is the new odds-on favourite to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year, after Ladbrokes slashed his odds from 14/1 to 5/6.
The Ulsterman is now 7/1 favourite to win The Open next month, and the bookie offers 16/1 that he breaks Jack Nicklaus’ record of eighteen Major wins. It’s also 4/1 that he becomes World Number One at any time in 2011.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said, “The punters love McIlroy, and we’ve seen plenty of money come in for him to win Sports Personality. We’re expecting to see plenty more in the run-up to the Open, where he’s deservedly favourite after his display at the Congressional.”
