Royal Ascot Day 5 Preview: Saturday 18 June
So if you have any cash left, here’s the final day preview. At the time of writing there are no final declarations but Aidan O’Brien’s Await the Dawn is the one for the Hardwicke Stakes for me.
This four-year-old is lightly raced and was impressive on his reappearance at Chester in the Huxley Stakes. He is a class individual and my only reservation is the mile and a half trip as he is yet to race beyond 10 furlongs. However, there is plenty of stamina on the dam’s side of his pedigree and I think he will.
The Golden Jubilee is the final Group 1 of the meeting and Delegator will be popular in this for Saeed bin Suroor and Mickael Barzalona.
This horse looked a star when dropped to six furlongs for the first time in the Duke of York last time out when his trainer said he was only 85% fit and this is the one ride Frankie is gutted to be missing (he is suspended for the final two days of the meeting). He is 9/2 favourite to take top sprinting honours here. Star Witness is 8/1 along with Bated Breath.
Bated Breath is a horse I like and it’s a real blow for Steve Drowne that he won’t be fit to ride Roger Charlton’s horse. It’s a shame because this is an improving horse and he has a real shout stepped up into Group 1 company for the first time. Laddies Poker Two could be one for each way punters at 12/1. She won the Wokingham here, but hasn’t had much racing and there could be more to come from the grey.
Hoof It is joint favourite for the Wokingham Handicap and deservedly so. For me he is the one they all have to beat and this may well be the last time the 7/1 shot runs in a handicap for some time.
Mick Easterby sends him down from his Yorkshire stables and if this horse wins he will be only the trainer’s 2nd Royal Ascot winner – I’d love to be there to see that! Hoof It comes here having beaten Horseradish in a competitive York handicap and he is six from 14 overall and is a very consistent horse. He is part owned by Lee Westwood and I hope he wins for him (and us!).
Good luck with all your bets
