The Players Championship and the Italian Open continue into Round 2 today, Woods and Mickelson are 4 shots off.
The Players Championship:
After Round 1, it would seem Tiger has allayed some of the fears of his backers (at a sizable 9/1) by shooting a credible 2 under par 70 to lie 4 shots off the leader JB Holmes. Woods is now 8/1 clear fav with Paddy Power. At one stage, he drove a wood directly up in the air that barely reached the fairway cut but he had a nearly clean round, aside from a bogey on the 18th.
Other pre-tournament favourite, Phil Mickelson, has drifted to 12/1 with 888sport, despite also scoring a round of 70. JB Holmes, joint leader with Australia’s Robert Allenby on -6, is 28/1 with Stan James to hold his nerve over 3 more rounds, Allenby is 16/1 to do likewise with William Hill.
Lee Westwood is in contention, one shot off the leaders after an excellent round of -5, and is 8/1 with Betdaq to win. Luke Donald, some say the forgotten man of European golf, is also -5 with Westwood and bet365 have him at 18/1 to bet top after 4 rounds, despite the fact he hasn’t won an event in 4 years.
Italian Open:
England’s Graeme Storm and Robert Rock lead the way on -5, Storm is 12/1 with Paddy Power. Miguel Angel Jimenez, one shot further back, is also 12/1 with Paddy Power.
Home attention at the Italian Open focused on the professional debut of Matteo Manassero, 17, who finished thirteenth in the Open at Turnberry last year and 36th in the Masters last month. The Italian did not disappoint, with a round of 70 and is 24/1 with Betdaq to take the title here.
