Three points against Sunderland at Anfield is a must if Liverpool are to revive their flagging hopes of finishing in a Champions League place.
Only Aston Villa and Arsenal have managed to win at Anfield in the Premiership this season and so it’s perhaps not a huge surprise to see hosts Liverpool installed by Ladbrokes as strong, 1/3 favourites and a Sunderland triumph chalked up at as high as 11/1 by Victor Chandler ahead of the pair’s Merseyside meeting.
The Black Cats’ poor away record contributes further to those prices but Steve Bruce’s men, now unbeaten in five, managed to nick a point at Villa in midweek and so Betdaq’s 9/2 for them to do likewise in this one shouldn’t be discounted while the same can be said of 888Sport’s 10/1 for it to finish one-each.
Bruce’s charges certainly warrant an interest in the handicaps, not necessarily when given a goal start by Betfred at odds of 12/5 but alternatively, when starting with the benefit of a two-goal cushion at 3/4 with William Hill, as they can restrict Rafa Benitez’s men.
Nevertheless, Liverpool should ultimately sneak it, probably by a one-goal margin (13/5, bet365) and more specifically Stan James post 8/1 against a 2-1 Reds triumph.
The corresponding fixture at the Stadium of Light, was famously settled by a goal that deflected off a stray beach ball but the goal was given to Darren Bent, who is an alluring 9/1 with Paddy Power to notch first on this occasion, presumably without outside assistance. However, it’s Fernando Torres that will shoulder the most first scorer bets, at 5/2 with Totesport.
