This year’s Golden Globe nominations have been announced giving cinema goers a strong indication as to who might go forward for Oscar nominations next year.
Irish rockers U2, Brendan Gleeson and Daniel Day-Lewis are amongst this year’s hopefuls but it’s Jason Reitman’s ‘Up in the Air’ starring George Clooney that has everyone, well…up in the air!
The recession themed comedy drama received an astonishing six Golden Globe nods and Paddy Power have made it their 6/4 favourite to win Best Motion Picture Drama. There’s nothing between Jason Reitman and Avatar’s James Cameron for Best Dire! ctor with Paddy Power quoting them as joint 13/8 favourites.
The odds on Up in the Air winning all six categories is 8/1 while Rob Marshall’s ‘Nine’ looks set to be another big winner on the night having received a total of four nods. The musical which stars British/Irish actor Daniel Day Lewis is odds-on at 4/6 to win Best Comedy/Musical.
Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power warned: “A lot of people were surprised by ‘Up in the Air’s’ six nods but it is a movie that pretty much sums up the economic difficulties faced in 2009 and one that many people will relate to. They say the Globes gives a good indication as to what films will do well at the Oscars. If that’s the case then ‘Up in the Air’, ‘Avatar’ and ‘Nine’ will all be big contenders come February!”
The Golden Globe Awards will broadcast Live from Hollywood on January 17th.
