Live on BBC2: Thu 08.00: Angus Loughran previews this week’s 2011 Open Championship and outlines his selections: Selections:
Rory Mcllroy is a worthy 8/1 favourite with bet365 to follow up his US Open runaway success and the only reason he is as big is because of Luke Donald’s equally runaway win in Sunday’s Scottish Open, which has seen his price collapse to a tight 12/1 (Ladbrokes).
Donald tends to play well the week after a win and has a great chance win his first Major this week and prove he is a deserved World Number 1. Donald may have gone into US Open overtired but heads to Sandwich full of confidence and should take all the beating this week.
Matt Kuchar looks the American to side with this week and is a generous 40/1 with Paddy Power while at 50/1 (Coral) KJ Choi wil have his supporters and looks overpriced.
Matteo Manneserro will be my Open pick at Lytham in 2012 and William Hill have tempted me at 70/1 this year as I am convinced this Italian teenager is going to give Rory McIlroy a good run for his money over the next decade.
Tom Lewis may not be known to many but he looks a great bet at 11/10 with Unibet to be top Amateur this week he hails from the same club as Nick Faldo and won a boys event at Sandwich in 2009.
The weather will have a big influence as it always does and Matt Kuchar could have the best of it while my final selection is Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel who has a far better chance than his 50/1 at Betdaq suggests and he also has a Thursday afternoon, Friday morning start which looks ideal.
Good luck
Angus Loughran
