Five to follow on Saturday

Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Goodwood and Windsor on Saturday. View selections below.

REGAL REALITY (3.35) was so impressive when scoring at Salisbury almost three weeks ago that he is fancied to mop up the Ladbrokes Celebration Mile at soggy Goodwood.

Sir Michael Stoute’s gelding drew more than three lengths clear in the Sovereign Stakes and although the track was riding slick that day, Regal Reality has handled soft in the past, most recently when third at Royal Ascot. He wore a visor at Salisbury and the headgear is retained.

Class act Benbatl has yet to prove he is effective on deep ground but his Godolphin owners seem happy to let him take his chance. The six-year-old has raced mainly abroad in recent seasons and his latest third in Saudi Arabia came on the dirt. He may well adapt to conditions and clearly represents a threat along with course winner Duke Of Hazzard, Century Dream and Positive.

SUBJECTIVIST (3.00) may be seen to best advantage when dominating in small fields and he puts that theory to the test in the four-runner March Stakes over 1m 6f. The colt was out of his depth in the Great Volitgeur Stakes at York ten days ago but had earlier made all to land the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton before posting an excellent third to Mogul at Royal Ascot.

Likely favourite Cabaletta receives the 3lb sex allowance and chased home useful Enbihaar over course and distance at the festival fixture. Celtic Art takes a big step up in trip, while Table Mountain will probably find this company too hot to handle.

JUNKANOO (4.45) produced a 50-1 shock at the Glorious Goodwood meeting and will be hard to beat off a 4lb higher mark. David Egan was able to thread his way through off a fast pace and similar tactics will be employed. Lawn Ranger made all to come home unchallenged in this 1m 1f handicap last year and is another to run the track well. He is up 4lb and 10st 3lb is a welter burden. Exec Chef is sliding down the ratings and wasn’t disgraced in finishing sixth to Muraad over course and distance.

DESERT ENCOUNTER (2.40) has such an impressive course record that he can land his second August Stakes at Windsor.

The eight-year-old scooped this Listed prize two years ago and stepped up to land the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes on a return trip to the twisting track last summer. Desert Encounter finished just a head in front of re-opposing Le Don De Vie when chasing home Pablo Escobarr at Glorious Goodwood but proven course form may prove decisive.

This year’s Winter Hill Stakes may fall to FOX CHAIRMAN (3.15). His proven ability to thrive in the mud is a big advantage and he arrives on the back of an excellent second to Roger Charlton’s Aspetar in the York Stakes.

Charlton relies on Extra Elusive and his five-year-old must concede 3lb to all five opponents. He beat Certain Lad in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock in early August and the runner-up scooped the Group 3 Strensall Stakes at York last Saturday, so there is nothing wrong with that form. King Ottokar acts on soft and is a danger, while Sinjaari cannot be overlooked after beating Certain Lad in the John Smith’s Cup at York last month.
