CARADOC (2.30) appears primed for a huge run in the 23-runner John Smith’s Cup at York.

Ed Walker’s gelding was backed to land an Epsom handicap on Derby Day but never had an earthly after being settled well off the pace by Oisin Murphy. Last turning for home, Caradoc made significant late headway into sixth behind Sky Defender, leaving the impression there was more in the locker. James Doyle takes the reins today.

Pivoine and Euchen Glen, previous winners of this valuable handicap, are back for another bash while last year’s Cambridgeshire third Good Birthday holds each-way claims along with Great Example, course specialist Rise Hall and top weight What’s The Story, third last year.

It is good to see Jamie Spencer back on track following a long recuperation from injury and it would be fitting if PREJUDICE (3.40) could land the 1m 3f William Hill Handicap.

David Simcock’s gelding will strip sharper for a recent Kempton outing and his third to useful Setting Sail at Newmarket last June was a smashing effort. Elector returned from a 306-day absence to run fourth to Harrovian at Doncaster and should be involved if his stamina lasts out over this longer trip.

At Newbury, METHOD (2.15) looks one for favourite backers in the bet365 Rose Bowl Stakes. Martyn Meade’s colt spread-eagled his field on debut at Doncaster 22 days ago and the manner of that success stamped him as a smart juvenile.

HUBOOR (2.50) is trading at more attractive odds in the fillies’ handicap over a straight mile. Mark Johnston’s three-year-old finished a close sixth in the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot and was a dual winner on good ground last summer.

SHAILENE (3.25) is trading around 10-1 with sponsors bet365 for the 1m 4f Listed Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes and there is good reason to believe she will outrun her price.

Andrew Balding’s mare beat Solo Sizzler and Scarlet Dragon over course and distance last September and forget her last run at Royal Ascot when the saddle slipped. Virgin Snow was a beaten favourite at Newcastle but could be crying out for this longer distance.
