PAUL NICHOLLS despatches a strong Saturday team across the country and CALVA D’AUGE (2.45) can justify the trip north to Kelso.
The five-year-old could hardly arrive in better form ahead of the feature William Hill Premier Novices’ Hurdle, rattling off victories at Wincanton and Plumpton on soft ground after being outclassed by Fiddleronthehoof in the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown in early January. Clondaw Caitlin has won her last three for Ruth Jefferson and the mare rates a threat in receipt of her 7lb sex allowance. Multellie has plenty to find on official figures but is a strong stayer under testing conditions.
CILL ANNA (3.00) should be Nicholls’ banker of the day in the three-mile mares’ hurdle at Doncaster. The five-year-old seeks a hat-trick following successes at Wincanton and Warwick over 2m 5f but she may well improve again for this step up in trip.
Feature event on Town Moor is the 3m 2f 888sport Grimthorpe Handicap Chase, with CHIDSWELL (3.35) bidding to repeat last year’s thumping victory. The Nicky Richards-trained gelding warmed up nicely with a course third to classy Ok Corral in the Sky Bet Chase and rates a bit of each-way value.
Definitly Red, winner of this race in 2017, has been lumbered with 12st 7lb and Brian Ellison applies cheek-pieces. The top weight chased home re-vitalised Vintage Clouds in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock and should go well along with the Nicholls-trained Worthy Farm.
