FUSIL RAFFLES (3.00) is probably the most exciting young horse on display this weekend and Nicky Henderson’s four-year-old can mop up the Unibet Elite Hurdle at Wincanton.
The stable took home the lolly last year with Verdana Blue and Fusil Raffles will be a short price to follow suit on the evidence of last May’s Punchestown victory in the Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle. Paul Nicholls is always strongly represented at his local track and Grand Sancy, a last-flight faller at Kempton when held by Silver Streak, is the main threat.
Colin Tizzard should be on the scoreboard courtesy of RESERVE TANK (2.25) in the 2m 4f Novices’ Chase. His gelding was a warm order to land a tight three-runner contest at Chepstow last month but had no answer when patiently-ridden Jarveys Plate swept past. Reserve Tank scooped all four novice hurdles last season and remains an exciting prospect. The Nicholls-trained mare If You Say Run, a Worcester winner last month, looks sure to go well.
Two former winners of the Badger Beers Silver Trophy, Present Man and The Young Master, lock horns in the 3m 1f chase but they may have to give best to WHITE MOON (3.35). The grey was narrowly in front when appearing to lose his footing after jumping the last here 13 days ago and clearly arrives fighting fit. The Young Master had Give Me A Copper 19 lengths adrift when runner-up in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown and may confirm places.
At Aintree, THE LAST DAY (1.30) can gain compensation after bypassing an engagement last Saturday. Evan Williams gave him plenty of time to recover from a heavy last-fence fall on chasing debut at Newbury last season and The Last Day enjoyed a confidence booster when hunting up White Moon in a Beginners’ Chase at Exeter. Baby King and Charmant will have their supporters.
VIVE LE ROI (2.40) is attractively priced in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle over three miles. The track will be riding deep and Vive Le Roi handled the mud when beating Rockpoint over this trip at Newbury last November.
