LOGICIAN (3.35) has been brought along very cannily by John Gosden and is a worthy favourite to land the William Hill St Leger, the final Classic of the season, at Doncaster.

Logician extended his unbeaten sequence to four with a comfortable victory in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur at York last month. Frankie Dettori eased the imposing grey to the front over two furlongs out and the son of Frankel had plenty in hand over Aidan O’Brien’s Constantinople.

O’Brien’s Sir Dragonet has been well supported in the run-up to the race which is interesting. He was sent off favourite for the Investec Derby on the strength of a breath-taking eight lengths victory in the Chester Vase (good to soft) but managed only fifth. Sir Dragonet returned from a break to run fourth to Joseph O’Brien’s Buckhurst in the Royal Whip at the Curragh but even allowing for the inadequate 1m 2f trip, it was still a disappointing effort. Stablemate Il Paradiso, third to Stradivarius at York, looked a proper galloper and the long straight on Town Moor should suit.

AMOMENTOFMADNESS (1.50) bids for back-to-back successes in the William Portland Handicap over the extended five furlongs. Charlie Hills has some real speedballs in his yard and Amomentofmadness blitzed his rivals from the front 12 months ago off a 4lb higher mark. William Buick renews the partnership and Amomentofmadness hinted he was coming to hand at the right time with a close-up fifth to Dakota Gold at York last month. Arecibo finished third that day and is entitled to go close in first-time blinkers for David O’Meara. Stall two out on the wing is a worry.

SHINE SO BRIGHT (2.25) made all to hold off Laurens in a thriller at York and is a specialist at this 7f trip. He had to show plenty of resolution on the Knavesmire and should be capable of conceding 3lb to Turjomaan, a close second to the progressive Duke Of Hazzard at Goodwood in early August.

THREAT (3.00) has to give away 3lb to his four challengers but Richard Hannon’s Gimcrack winner at York should be up to the task. His second to Golden Horde in the Qatar Richmond Stakes at Goodwood was another top-drawer performance.

At Chester, BEN VRACKIE (2.05) can call the shots in the 1m 4f SportPesa Stand Cup. John Gosden’s colt dashed to the front from a very wide draw in the Ebor at York but those early exertions eventually took their toll as he faded into seventh. He had to overcome a slow break at Royal Ascot before going down by a short head to Baghdad in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes and that sets a high standard. Ben Vrackie meets four talented rivals, however, and it is an intriguing contest.
