HEADMAN (3.00) seemed to get bogged down behind King Ottokar at soggy Newbury last month but conditions should be more suitable on a return trip to the Berkshire track in the competitive London Gold Cup.
Roger Charlton has won three of the last eight renewals and Headman ran two cracking races on the all-weather last season, scoring on debut at Newcastle before chasing home Charlie Appleby’s Zakouski at Kempton. That form is solid as Zakouski wasn’t beaten far in fifth behind Skardu in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket last month.
LE BRIVADO (3.40) wins a narrow vote over Laurens in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes. The five-year-old landed the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last season when trained by Andre Fabre and he shaped with promise on his debut for Aidan O’Brien when a close third in the Gladness Stakes at Naas.
Laurens possibly produced a personal best when scooping the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket last October and she is a big threat in receipt of the fillies’ allowance.
SPACE TRAVELLER (1.50) chased home Shine So Bright in the European Free Handicap at Newmarket last month and Richard Fahey’s colt is trading at attractive odds in the Carnarvon Stakes. Moyasser scored at HQ two weeks ago but a 9lb rise seems pretty severe.
SALUTE THE SOLDIER (5.25) was beaten on the nod by Petrus at Bath but the application of cheek-pieces may help him turn the tables in the concluding Toronado Handicap over the straight mile. Thrave’s fourth to Beringer at Newmarket puts him firmly in the mix.
At Doncaster, GALLIC (6.35) should go well in the mile handicap. Ed Walker’s filly ran third at Newmarket behind two subsequent winners in Aweedram and Archaeology.
