Paul Fergusontwo selections from Newbury for us on Saturday; Buzz at 1.45 and Young Rascal at 2.20.
Twice a winner at Kempton earlier in the season, Buzz (1:45) appeared not to stay at Nottingham last time and should appreciate the drop in trip at Newbury this afternoon.
Fifth over course-and-distance on his seasonal reappearance (has a 2lbs pull with market leader Adamant for a little over 3 lengths), he missed a couple of big race targets through the summer due to quick ground and might well be capable of going close from stall one.
Available at 20-1 at the time of writing, he is worth backing each-way in a really competitive handicap.
In the very next race, I’m looking forward to the return of Young Rascal (2:20) for William Haggas. An impressive maiden winner over course-and-distance – beat the useful Corgi on that occasion – the Intello colt went on to win the Group 3 Chester Vase and that form reads really well. Runner-up Dee Bee Ex filled the same spot at Epsom and finished fourth in last week’s St Leger; third home Hunting Horn won the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot; and fifth home Flag Of Honour has won three times since, latterly in the Irish St Leger last weekend.
Young Rascal appeared to struggle with the undulations at Epsom in the Derby and will be much better suited by the course this afternoon. He will need to be wound up to beat a race-fit Mirage Dancer, but in receipt of 6lbs I’m happy to take a chance.
Saturday’s selections:
1:45 Newbury – Buzz; 18/1 Unibet
2:20 Newbury – Young Rascal; 9/2 Ladbrokes
