THOMAS PATRICK (3.00) has been well supported ahead of today’s Ladbrokes Trophy Chase at Newbury and his backers are entitled to be fairly confident of a bold show. Still only a six-year-old, Thomas Patrick was a three-time winner last season on soft/heavy and he made an encouraging comeback at Sandown when beaten half a length by the re-opposing Elegant Escape. My selection is 5lb better off. Top weight Black Corton rarely runs a bad race under Bryony Frost and again should give his fan club a thrill at tasty each-way odds.
The Ladbrokes Intermediate Hurdle has attracted a classy field and MONT DES AVALOIRS (1.50) can reward an each-way dabble. The Paul Nicholls-trained gelding brought the curtain down on last season with a fourth to Ballymoy at Sandown but has prospects of overturning the places on 8lb better terms.
Only five go to post for the opening mares’ novices hurdle but it is still an interesting little contest. POSH TRISH (12.10) was beaten more than three lengths by Nicky Henderson’s Lust For Glory over course and distance early last month but perhaps significantly Nicholls is prepared to send Posh Trish back into battle with an 8lb turnaround in the weights.
At Newcastle, BUVEUR D’AIR (2.05) bids to follow up last year’s BetVictor Fighting Fifth Hurdle success. Nicky Henderson’s champion hurdler has been beaten only once in his last 13 outings and has had a wind op since edging out Melon at Cheltenham in March. His rivals are no pushover, however, with Samcro surely capable of leaving his disappointing return at Down Royal behind him. Summerville Boy beat Kalashnikov and Mengli Khan in last year’s Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and shouldn’t be dismissed lightly.
BISHOPS ROAD (3.20) found only Beware The Bear too strong in last year’s Rehearsal Chase but races off a 7lb lower mark today. Kerry Lee’s stayer finished a good second to Red Infantry at Haydock last weekend.
