DASH OF SPICE (3.40) will be a popular choice in the 21-runner John Smith’s Handicap at York following his high-profile success at Epsom on Derby Day before following up in great style at Royal Ascot.
He incurs a 5lb penalty for landing the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes but the handicapper may not have put the brakes just yet on David Elsworth’s improving colt. Euchen Glen should get the fast pace he needs to attack and could hit the frame at bigger odds.
If all eight runners stand their ground in the opener TAKE COVER (1.55) is well worth an each-way interest. Last year’s winner of this contest warmed up with a terrific effort under 10-stone at Beverley when third to Judicial and Line Of Reason. Muthmir looks the one to beat.
DAL HARRAILD (2.35) is well served by conditions in the Group 3 John Smith’s Silver Cup Stakes. He gave weight and a sound beating to subsequent Ebor winner Nakeeta over course and distance last May and looks banker material if back on song following a poor run when last seen at Meydan.
At Newmarket, EQTIDAR (2.15) has been well-touted for the Darley July Cup on the back of his Commonwealth Cup success and is taken to confirm Royal Ascot form with the admirably consistent Sands Of Mali. Sir Michael Stoute’s three-year-old looks a very progressive sprinter.
FIRST CONTACT (3.20) endured a miserable passage in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot after being hampered shortly after the start. He did well in the circumstances to finish 11th to prominently-ridden Ostilio and this nine-runner handicap should be a cleaner race.
