Paul Fergusontwo selections from Newcastle or us on Saturday; Bedrock (1.30) and Withhold (2.05) and Beringer at York (3.20).
Despite being off the track since October Withhold (2:05) is fancied to justify favouritism in today’s Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.
An impressive winner of the Cesarewitch when last seen, he needs to defy a 12lbs rise in the weights, but that form is rock-solid and he looks a potential Group class stayer. Hopefully, he is fully wound up for this belated reappearance.
Earlier on the card Bedrock (1:30) is worth chancing each-way in the consolation race, despite being drawn widest of all in stall 20.
Iain Jardine’s useful dual-purpose performer won well at Musselburgh earlier in the month and gets in here under a 5lb penalty, despite going up 8lbs for that win. He looks the type to win a nice prize this summer and although he will need luck in running, a chance can be taken at the odds.
At York, Alan King’s progressive Beringer (3:20) takes a step up in class, as he goes in search of a hat-trick.
Impressive at both Leicester and Sandown, the Sea The Stars gelding has to contend with a 9lbs higher mark here and some stronger opposition. He looked a three-year-old on the up last time, however, and could take the step up in grade in his stride.
Saturday’s selections:
1:30 Newcastle – Bedrock; 9/1 bet365
2:05 Newcastle – Withhold; 9/2 Paddy Power
3:20 York – Beringer; 7/2 William Hill
