Paul Ferguson has one selection for us on Saturday; two selections for us on Saturday; Vision des Flos in the Hereford 12:25 and Count Meribel in the Cheltenham 2:30.
Despite having to concede weight all around Count Meribel (2:30) is fancied to land the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham this afternoon.
The five-year-old looks a typical Nigel Twiston-Davies type – a highly progressive young stayer – and the form of his latest two victories looks solid. At Carlisle on his penultimate start, he gave 6lbs to subsequent Ascot winner Kildistart and he completed the hat-trick at Ascot last time, beating a nice sort in the shape of Perfect Harmony.
The way he goes through his races suggests that today’s longer trip will be right up his street – certainly didn’t stop rolling at Ascot last time – and I would personally have him clear favourite for this, despite the penalty. He was available at 9-4 second best with Bet365, at the time of writing.
At Hereford, it will be slightly disappointing if Vision des Flos (12:55) can’t get off the mark over hurdles, at the third time of asking.
Already officially rated 135, Colin Tizzard’s four-year-old was probably pitched in too deep in two Grade 2 contests and ought to appreciate the ease in class. The form of his Punchestown Festival bumper success reads particularly well now and it is hoped that he can get his campaign back on track, with a victory under Bryan Cooper.
