Paul Ferguson two selections for us on Saturday; Who Dares Wins in the 14:10 at Chester and Wait For Me in the 15:25 at Newton Abbot.
A course winner back in July of last year Who Dares Wins (2:10) is fancied to land this afternoon’s 1m5½f Listed handicap at Chester, for Alan King and Tom Marquand.
Fourth in the Chester Cup here back in May, the five-year-old again shaped well when third behind Thomas Hobson in the Ascot Stakes and, though the shorter trip is a slight worry, he holds sound claims from the same mark. It should also be remembered that last year’s course win came over 1m4f, so he clearly isn’t devoid of pace.
He was available at 9-2 at the time of writing, as was the day’s other selection Wait For Me (3:25) in Newton Abbot’s Bet totequadpot Handicap Hurdle.
Philip Hobbs’ seven-year-old won the final race of last season at Sandown, quickening up stylishly at the end of 2m4f, on his first attempt at the trip. Up 7lbs for that success, the Saint Des Saints looks open to further progress at this sort of distance and racing on good ground around today’s tight track should be ideal.
Even though he has gone up in the weights, I thoroughly expect him to go close, given the class of races he was contesting last term. A big run looks on the cards, especially if Richard Johnson is able to settle him in the early stages of the contest, as he can be pretty headstrong sometimes.
