The Skybet League two season gets underway on August 6 with Portsmouth favourites to go one better this time Free Bets |
We’ve been here before. Portsmouth were trading at a similar price to win League Two twelve months ago and you can currently get 9/2 (bet365) that Paul Cook’s team claim the title this time around.
Pompey were some way off the pace when landing a play-off spot and face the usual problems of breaking down organised teams, with Luton potentially a better alternative at 10/1.
Nathan Jones looks a progressive sort of manager who should have the Hatters challenging for automatic promotion, with Jack Marriott banging in the goals during pre-season.
Doncaster Rovers are a 9/1 chance with bet365 and Darren Ferguson will want to make Rovers’ stay in League Two a short one, with Leyton Orient also among the favourites at 11/1 (Ladbrokes) although Andy Hessenthaler could face difficulties at boardroom level.
A more interesting contender is Plymouth Argyle who led League Two briefly last season before slipping into the play-off spots. Derek Adams should continue his good work at Home Park, with William Hill going 14/1 about the Pilgrims landing top spot.
Cambridge United look like another team likely to be in the mix, with Stan James going 16/1 about Shaun Derry’s side, while Carlisle United are slightly bigger at 18/1 (Sky Bet) although Keith Curle only has a small squad available at the time of writing.
John McGreal is the rookie manager in charge of Colchester United and they are a 20/1 poke, with Blackpool also likely to struggle after relegation and Hills are among the firms offering 20/1 about the Tangerines.
Cheltenham are far more interesting at 25/1 (BetVictor), with Gary Johnson’s side having walked the National League last term and we should expect plenty from sharp shooter Dan Holman.
The other side we like is Notts County at 25/1, with bet365 offering an attractive price about a team managed by John Sheridan, someone who did well with Oldham last term.
