AFTER last weekend’s embarrassment of riches, this Saturday’s fare is something of a poor relation. That said, the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury is always an exciting spectacle and LADY IN QUESTION (4.10) has been kept under wraps by Richard Fahey since scoring on her only start at Thirsk in mid-May.
The form of that event has worked out well and Fahey saddled the 1-2 last year with Lathom and Mr Lupton. Paul Hanagan has a great record when teaming up with his old guv’nor and Lady In Question can edge out Scottish raider Clem Fandango.
Keith Dalgleish’s filly was collared close home by Grizzel in the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley and although she was left behind in the slipstream of Wesley Ward’s turbo-charged Lady Aurelia in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, she stayed on gamely into third. Clem Fandango races off the minimum 8st and must go well.
SCOTTISH (3.00) had his first run for Charlie Appleby (formerly with Andrew Balding) in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown in May, leading over a furlong out before being put in his place by Time Test. His victory over Mutakayyef in the Doonside Cup at Ayr last September was given a boost by that horse’s triumph in the Summer Mile at Ascot last weekend and he is worthy favourite.
GM Hopkins was stepped up to 10 furlongs at Sandown and made a good stab of it, finishing third to Ayrad.
IBN MALIK (3.35) can can close at a nice price in the tough-to-call Group 3 six-furlong contest. Charlie Hills’ three-year-old led two out in the Jersey Stakes but faded into fourth behind Ribchester. That was only the sixth start of Ibn Malik’s career which has seen him tackle top-notch company like Galileo Gold and he should be on the premises.
Experienced sprinter The Tin Man took the scalp of Watchable quite comfortably at Windsor back in April but ran a stinker behind Twilight Sun when expected to go close in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
DRAGON MALL (4.45) hasn’t been seen in public since splitting Thikriyaat and Scrutineer at Newmarket in May but David Simcock has his three-year-old primed for a big effort in the bet365 Handicap.
My other bet is DAVID’S DUCHESS (2.40) in the fillies’ handicap at Newmarket.
The Fahey stable have plundered some nice races at HQ and David’s Duchess hacked up at long odds-on at Hamilton in June. This followed a solid effort behind Red Box (winner since) at Carlisle a fortnight earlier.
David’s Duchess finished fourth in the Weatherbys Super Sprint on this weekend 12 months ago and she isn’t overburdened on a mark on 75.
