Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Glorious Goodwood and Hamilton Park on Saturday. View selections below.
MUTHMIR (3.50) did us a good turn last weekend and William Haggas’s classy sprinter can defy a fixed 6lb penalty in the 32Red Stewards’ Cup on the final day of Glorious Goodwood. Haggas also saddles last year’s impressive winner Rex Imperator but he has been lumbered with top weight. He will do very well to concede 10lb to Muthmir and I expect Dane O’Neill’s mount to cruise into contention from a potentially good berth in stall two on the far side. It’s always risky to be dogmatic about the draw in this 28-runner minefield and, on the opposite side of the course, it might be worth having a saver on speedy and in-form Discussiontofollow (23).
The opening 32RedSport.com consolation sprint may throw up a valuable clue to the draw and TATLISU (2.05) would also be a pointer to Muthmir’s prospects as Richard Fahey’s four-year-old beat him narrowly at Newcastle in June. Tatlisu remains in great nick judged on his most recent second to Blaine in the Scottish Stewards’ Cup at Hamilton and Ryan Moore has options from stall 17.
Haggas has prospects of landing an earlier event with SATELLITE (2.40) in the 1m 4f Jaguar Stakes. He looked a tricky customer when beaten on the nod at Doncaster in early June and, hopefully, there will be no repeat of those wayward antics now that the experiment with a hood has been ditched. Any rain would be in his favour and he will need to be at the top of his game to see off smart types Double Bluff, only denied by ante-post Ebor favourite Pallasator at Ascot, stablemate Rainbow Rock (runner-up on Thursday) and the improving Second Step.
French filly NARNIYN (3.15) is an interesting runner in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes. This shorter trip will suit better than the 12 furlongs she contested in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (the race in which Lady Cecil’s Noble Mission was mugged on the line), after mopping up four straight victories over 1m 2f, all on soft ground. Back against her own sex, Narniyn may have slipped slightly under the radar.
The best could be saved for last as INCURS FOUR FAULTS (8.45) should take some beating in Hamilton’s finale. Trainer Keith Dalgleish saddles bags of winners at his local track and Incurs Four Faults hosed up here last month. He threw the toys out of the pram at Carlisle 11 days ago when awkward at the start and unable to dominate, but normal service should be resumed.
