Haydock stage a most informative afternoon card and in the opener Idder is of interest for Roger Varian but as a son of Authorized he might be quite at his best on the forecast good to firm ground and he is overlooked. I like the chances of New Story (2.10) despite giving weight away to all seven of his rivals.
The selection won a Salisbury maiden last time and whilst the time was nothing special he travelled like a good horse, is bred to appreciate fast ground and the fact that he holds an entry in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York next month suggests connections feel he might be well treated off a mark of 85.
The 6f Handicap for three-year-olds looks a cracker and top-weight Fast Track (3.15) gets the vote after an encouraging comeback over the minimum trip at Newmarket last month. This is his first start over 6f but as a son of Arc winner Rail Link you would be disappointed if the additional furlong wasn’t within his compass. Roger Varian’s Double Up has started market leader for all three starts and is obviously thought capable of much better than he has shown to date. He looks a big danger especially if there is market support.
The Kid (4.25) looks a progressive stayer for local trainer Tom Dascombe and he deservedly got his head in front at Bath at the beginning of the month. He has been raised 5lbs for that success but we know he goes on the ground and was value for more than his neck victory last time.
The mile maiden sees runners from many of the top yards including the 220,000 Guineas purchase Elsiniaar (4.55) of Roger Varian who hasn’t been seen on the track since finishing second to Morpheus on ground which wouldn’t have suited this son of New Approach. His subsequent absence is a cause for concern but the fact that connections have persevered with him suggest he is up to winning a maiden at the very least.
The opening 7f maiden at Newbury is often won by a well above average juvenile including Muwaary twelve months ago who finished runner up at Royal Ascot in the Jersey Stakes last month. John Gosden has saddled two of the last three winners of the race but he doesn’t have a runner this afternoon and Nafaqa looks sure to have his supporters having shaped with considerable promise at Ascot on debut when a never nearer fourth.
Richard Hannon saddled the 1-2 home in a Sandown maiden with Richard Hughes correctly choosing Tupi over Marshall Jennings (2.00) but the latter is taken to go one better this afternoon. The Hannon camp have won this race twice in the last six years with decent types (Emerald Commander and Montiridge) and the yard have three of the 16 due to go to post in what ought to be a most informative contest. The selection cost £215,000 as a yearling and is entitled to come on for his initial start.
Brian Meehan introduced J Wonder to cause a 16/1 shock in the juvenile fillies’ maiden in 2013 and his Sulaalaat (2.30) was just touched off at Lingfield on debut and can go one better. Bought for 180,000 Gns back in October the filly holds entries in the Group 2 Lowther at York next month and in many of the valuable end of season sales’ races. She will be hard to beat.
The 10f fillies’ handicap is full of progressive sorts with four of the seven runners’ last time out winners. Baynunah is fascinating stepped up in trip from a mile for the first time but Sea The Bloom (3.05) is bred to be decent and she had a nice confidence booster when landing the odds at Carlisle last time. Ryan Moore takes the mount for the first time and she will be tough to beat.
The feature race is the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes and Adaay (3.40) is taken to put behind what has to be regarded as a disappointing run in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last time when finishing in mid-division although he was only beaten just over three lengths.
Trained by William Haggas the selection had won his first couple of starts in the manner of a decent colt and he can get his career back on track at the expense of unbeaten Limato who has won both his starts on Kempton’s polytrack surface. If he transfers his all-weather ability to turf he will be a tough nut to crack as he looked ready for a step up in class when winning a Novice event last time but Adaay went off 5/1 joint favourite for the Coventry and can redeem his tarnished reputation.
There are mixed messages in the pedigree of Enobled (4.45) as to whether she will appreciate the step up to 10f for the first time but she looked an unlucky loser when meeting interference in a valuable Sandown handicap over a mile last time.
The progressive Mark Johnston 3-y-old Insaany is the obvious danger looking for a fourth win in his last five starts but he is likely to go off a very short price in receipt of weight all round and after only six careers starts Enobled is open to further improvement.
