With yesterday’s abandonment of Sandown Wincanton takes centre stage and former Champion trainer Paul Nicholls always like to have winners at Wincanton his local track and Daryl Jacob takes the ride in the opener on Tagrita (12.25) who can follow up her recent Exeter success dropping back a couple of furlongs. She showed plenty of promise at Newbury on debut for the yard and it would be disappointing if she couldn’t follow up in this company.
Wings Of Smoke pulled his way to the front over 2m at Haydock last time but failed to get home and Dan Skelton’s Toby Lerone (2.05) had looked a most progressive performer before being caught out by the National fences at Aintree last month and is only 4lbs higher than when scoring at Lingfield previously. It is a question of pupil v master as the danger could be Jump City trained by Paul Nicholls. The selection had jumped quickly and accurately at Southwell and Lingfield when scoring previously, and let’s hope this is another Saturday winner to showcase the considerable and burgeoning training talents of Skelton.
Rocky Bender looks well handicapped but he often refuses to settle and over this extended 3 miles preference is for Mighty Mobb (3.15) trained by Philip Hobbs for Trevor Hemmings; yet to break his duck under rules he ran a career best on his first start over fences when runner up at Towcester and with that experience hind him he is taken to go one better.
I am very sweet on the chances of Don Pooleoni (3.50) despite top-weight in the finale for Harry Fry having been backed off the boards at Warwick last time when he didn’t quite get home over 2m 3f; this drop back in trip will suit, Noel Fehily takes the ride and this merits nap material for the weekend.
At Lingfield the feature 12f handicap is a cracker and Energia Eros is a fascinating contender despite top weight on his British debut for Marco Botti and a check of the market is needed for a horse who finished paced in two Group 1’s in his native Brazil. Kashmir Peak is going up the weights and never won in four starts at Dundalk on an all-weather surface and the nod goes to the former Stoute inmate Persepolis (2.35) well drawn in stall four and can reward each way support despite being 4lbs wrong at the weights.
At Newcastle the hope is that Dancing Art (12.35) is not too inconvenienced by the drop back to the minimum trip and he can win the four-runner handicap chase for the father/son combination of Keith and James Reveley. The selection’s two career wins have both come at Gosforth Park and he is only 1lb higher than for the last of those successes over an additional half mile.
He was off over 12 months before reappearing at Uttoxeter on soft ground over 3m back in November and has been given plenty of time to get over those exertions. Dotties Dilema is another who has been given plenty of time to get over his (yes his) chase debut when he was very well backed at Hexham. That form has been franked and he is a big danger representing the Lucinda Russell stable.
Dingo Bay won the corresponding race 12 months ago from a 14lbs lower mark but he is guaranteed to go in the ground and is entitled to come on for his comeback when he would have finished runner up to a progressive sort who has since followed up. The John Wade yard could be in better form but this is a home game for Dingo Bay and I expect a bold show.
