The Majors are over for 2013 and Jason Dufner was a well deserved winner of last Sunday’s PGA Championship, laying the ghost of losing a five-shot lead in the same event two years ago to rest. Henrik Stenson got us in the money with his solid third place, ensuring he was the top European and the in-form Swede really deserves a big win shortly.
Webb Simpson is the 14/1 market leader this week at Wyndham Championship in North Carolina and as he won here in 2011 it’s easy to see why. Moreover, Simpson has played some superb golf over last two weeks at Firestone and Oak Hill so he has to be on the short list.
Having shot a course record 61 on his way to victory in 2008 and managed placed efforts in both 2011 and 2012, Carl Pettersson clearly loves the venue and looks sure to give another good account of himself so he looks overpriced to me at 60/1.
Charles Howell III may not jump from the page as an obvious pick but as well as his top four finish here in 2011 he has played really well on his other four visits and is available at 80/1 with Coral, a price that looks well worth taking a chance on.
Elsewhere, Sergio Garcia is 20/1 to defend his title and will have his followers as he always does; he won by two strokes last year from Tim Clark, who made the cut at Oak Hill last week and is currently playing better golf than his scores suggest. Subsequently, at 50/1 the South African looks another to go well for each-way backers.
There is no action on European Tour but Gleneagles, home of 2014 Ryder Cup, plays host to the Johnnie Walker Championship next week.
The Solheim Cup takes place in Colarado though and while I would be delighted to see a European victory for the first time on American soil, I think USA will win with plenty in hand. For those who like a short price, Ladbrokes offer the best at 2/5.
