FRANKEL tops the bill at Newbury but NEHAAM (2.00) can raise a cheer from his backers on the supporting card. John Gosden’s horses produced some crackerjack performances at York this week and Nehaam sets a decent standard if able to replicate a close-up fourth to Fame And Glory at Ascot and a second to Times Up at Newmarket last season.
Gosden saddles THE NILE (3.20) closer to base at Newmarket and the three-year-old steps up in class after routing a modest bunch at Lingfield by no less than 11 lengths earlier this month.
Another Gosden inmate, THETURNOFTHESUN (5.40), is progressing with every run and a 4lb rise for last month’s cosy Kempton success is hardly severe. The form of his fourth in a competitive Doncaster maiden on his seasonal debut is also working out fairly well and there should be more to come from the son of Galileo.
There are some massive fields at Thirsk and Doncaster which makes life even tougher than usual on a busy Saturday. At Thirsk, the horse that most most catches the eye is CALICO CAT (4.40). Alistair Lidderdale pitched him at the deep-end on his racecourse debut, taking on Memphis Tennessee and Brown Panther in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester. Sent off a 66-1 chance, the four-year-old raised a few eyebrows in finishing third and rider Katia Scallan will be able to claim her 7lb allowance. Best of the three-year-old brigade may be Hallmark Star, who has yet to break his maiden tag after a string of frustrating placed efforts for Gerard Butler.
On the evening card at Doncaster, Brian Meehan’s MISSISSIPPI (7.45) can build on his recent impressive Kempton victory, which was only his second start.
