Live on SS1: Wed 17.00: Angus Loughran previews this week’s five-day WGC Accenture Matchplay event and gives us his tips.
A welcome change of format this week as the leading 64 Golfers in the World – apart from Phil Mickleson who has gone on holiday with his family and Paul Casey who is recovering from a winter sports injury – go head to head in Carling Cup style knockout action with extra holes and no 2nd chance – the WGC Accenture Matchplay.
It is rare to be able to get 14/1 about Tiger Woods but that is his price here with Betfred and although clearly not back to his best yet it is a fair price. Luke Donald is 18/1 to defend his title and despite a slow start to 2012 will be popular with BetVictor.
This is a really open event with bookies paying 4 places each way, ie to reach the semi finals. I am going to choose one in each bracket to see if we can find a winner;
Dustin Johnson at 33/1 (William Hill) appeals in the Bobby Jones section and if he beats tough Jim Furyk in round 1 he should have a big week.
Bubba Watson looks overpriced at 35/1 with Ladbrokes in the Ben Hogan section of draw on a course that will suit his game ideally.
Geoff Ogilvy should never be underestimated in this form of the game and is a tempting 55/1 (Totesport) in the Gary Player section.
While I have mentioned Tiger Woods at 14/1 in the Sam Snead section, teenager Matteo Manassero played so well here on debut last year so he is overpriced at 125/1 with Sportingbet.
This is an event where upsets often happen so don’t be put off by a big price as this event is great fun worth huge money and important Ryder Cup and World Ranking points, but dangerous for big hitters.
Good luck
Angus Loughran
