Live on SS1: Thu 02.00 & 08.30: Angus Loughran previews the President’s Cup and Alfred Dunhill C’ship and picks his Selections:
The only time the USA have been beaten in the The Presidents Cup was at Royal Melbourne in 1998 – the venue for this week’s contest – and when you put the two teams down on paper it is hard to see why they should not at least be favourites this week, yet Evens is freely available and go 11/10 which is well worth taking on an American victory.
Tiger Woods has a far better Presidents Cup Record than that in the Ryder Cup, even allowing for his top scoring effort in a USA defeat at Celtic Manor last October. He won all 5 matches he played in the last Presidents and looks value at 13/2 to be top USA points scorer (bet365) and 10/1 to be overall top points scorer (Boylesports). For correct score backers there are 34 points at stake so 19-15 to USA at 16/1 with bet365 is my choice here.
Pablo Martin has won the last 2 Alfred Dunhill Championships at Leopard Creek he is 33/1 at Skybet for the treble but is currently well short of what is required but dangerous to write off with such strong course form. Lee Slattery has a better chance than Ladbrokes odds of 40/1 suggest. He has played well here before in 2007 and was a winner in Madrid just over a month ago.
The Johor Open in Malaysia looks wide open but offers a chance to Dutchman Joost Luiten who continues to contend without being able to close things out. He is 20/1 (Paddy Power) this week and I am convinced his day will come soon. Ross Fisher is Sportingbet’s 33/1 chance and looks over the odds while Peter Lawrie will relish the forcast wet conditions and should give backers a good each way run for their money at 50/1 (Coral).
Good luck
Angus Loughran
